She met Jimmy Smits at Ithaca College, where they both attended in 1981. They started dating in 1969 and got engaged later. They tied the knot in 1981 in a private ceremony. They welcomed their daughter, Taina Smits, in 1973, and their son, Joaquin Smits, in 1983. Taina is a theatre teacher, director, and writer, while Joaquin’s occupation is unknown.
However, their marriage did not last long, and they divorced in 1987. Jimmy Smits then started dating actress Wanda De Jesus, whom he is still with.

Barbara Smits worked for Cornell Cooperative Extension-New York City (CCE-NYC) for 29 years. She moved to New York City in 1982 to work for the 4-H Program. She then became the executive staff assistant for the Environmental Issues Program Area. Later, she became the assistant to the executive director of CCE-NYC.
She was a dedicated and loyal employee who contributed to the organization’s mission and vision. She was also a loving and caring mother who supported her children’s dreams and aspirations.
In her honor, CCE-NYC established “The Barbara Smits Leadership Award” to recognize staff members who demonstrate excellence in leadership, teamwork, and service.

Barbara Smits suffered from pneumonia, a lung disease that made it difficult for her to breathe. After several medical tests, doctors found out that her pneumonia was incurable. She passed away peacefully on April 16, 2010, surrounded by her family and friends.
Her funeral was held privately, and her ashes were scattered in a place of her choice. Her family and friends paid tribute to her by sharing their memories and stories of her. They also thanked her for her love, kindness, and generosity.
