The Mysterious Disappearance and Tragic End of Mikeona Johnson
In the heart of South Central Los Angeles, a young mother named Mikeona Johnson vanished without a trace. Her story is one of heartache, unanswered questions, and the painful reality of how Black bodies can be overlooked within the criminal justice system.
The Disappearance
On the evening of September 9, 2020, Mikeona Johnson left her home to grab food for her family. She never returned. Her 5-year-old and 1-year-old daughters, innocent witnesses to her departure, would never see their mother alive again. The family’s frantic search led them to Johnson’s partially clothed body, covered by a blanket, in the back seat of her 2003 silver Mercedes-Benz.
The Investigation
Despite the anguish of her family, the investigation into Mikeona Johnson’s death faced significant challenges. The official cause of death remains elusive, listed as “undetermined pending an investigation.” The coroner’s office has yet to release a copy of her autopsy report to her grieving mother, Shalissa Collier. Johnson showed no signs of trauma to her vaginal areas, and there were no physical marks or bruises that would indicate a cause of death.
The Heartbroken Mother’s Quest for Answers
Shalissa Collier, left with more questions than answers, tirelessly sought justice for her daughter. She pounded the pavement, distributing flyers, reaching out to local media, and leveraging social media to spread the news of Johnson’s disappearance. But the leads were scarce, and the case grew colder.
The Bittersweet Closure
In March, Los Angeles police detectives delivered heartbreaking news to Collier: they were closing the case due to a lack of leads. The grief-stricken mother grappled with the reality that her daughter’s fate might remain forever shrouded in mystery. Mikeona Johnson, with her bubbly personality and unwavering love for her daughters, deserved better.
Undetermined, Unforgotten
Mikeona Johnson’s death remains undetermined, a haunting reminder of the gaps in our justice system. Her family continues to seek answers, refusing to let her memory fade away. As we reflect on her life and the injustice she faced, we must confront the systemic issues that allow such tragedies to persist.
