On December 8, 2006, Marty Moates’ life took a sudden turn. His wife, Heather, found him in his car near their home in La Costa, north of San Diego. The news of his passing shocked the American motocross community, where he had been a mainstay on the national circuit in the late 70s and early 80s.
Riding Legends and Triumphs
Marty Moates was an original member of the close-knit “El Cajon Zone,” a suburb of San Diego that produced riders like Marty Tripes, Broc Glover, and Rick Johnson. However, he will always be remembered for a historic achievement: becoming the first American to win the USGP (United States Grand Prix) at his backdoor track at Carlsbad Raceway in 1980 aboard an LOP Yamaha. Before this victory, Marty began his pro career as a Suzuki test rider alongside the legendary Bob Hannah. Prior to his USGP win, he also rode for the Ossa factory in Europe.
