A Heartbreaking Loss for Florida Basketball
Major Parker, a former Florida Gators basketball star and a member of the 2000 Final Four team, died last week at the age of 44. According to a social media post, Parker died of a heart-related issue. He had been living with limited functionality in his heart the last few years after surviving a heart attack that left him in a weeks-long coma.
Parker was a part of the first recruiting class of former head coach Billy Donovan, who transformed the Florida basketball program into a national powerhouse. Parker served as a team captain for two seasons and helped the Gators reach their first ever national championship game in 2000, where they lost to Michigan State.
Parker was known for his defensive prowess, leadership, and sacrifice on the court. He averaged 4.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in his four-year career, but his impact went beyond the numbers. He was a glue player who did whatever it took to help his team win, whether it was taking a charge, drawing a foul, or hitting a clutch shot.
A Troubled Post-UF Career
Parker’s life after college was not as smooth as his basketball career. He played two seasons of minor-league basketball before joining Donovan’s staff in 2003. However, in 2004, he was involved in a drug bust that resulted in him being fired from UF. He pleaded guilty in 2006 and was sentenced to six months of house arrest.
Parker expressed remorse for his mistake and apologized to the Gainesville community, the University of Florida, and everyone who cared about him. He said he wanted to move on with his life and make a positive impact on others.
A Grassroots Basketball Advocate
In recent years, Parker was involved in grassroots basketball efforts in Fort Lauderdale, his hometown. He coached and mentored young players and helped them develop their skills and character. He was passionate about the game and its potential to change lives.
Parker’s death was mourned by his former teammates, coaches, and fans, who remembered him as a great person and a Gator legend. He is survived by his wife and two children. A memorial service is planned for next weekend in Fort Lauderdale.
