Kamala Devi was born in Bombay (the current Mumbai) in British India on 8 October 1933. Her mother, Elizabeth, was of English-Welsh descent, and her father, Chandumal Amesur, was an Indian head-and-neck surgeon She started her career as a drama artist and performed in both male and female roles. She received many medals for her performances. She then shifted to the cinema field and acted in about 30 films, most of them being minor supporting roles. She also sang several songs in Telugu and Tamil films, such as the Telugu-Tamil film Patala Bhairavi, where she sang ‘Ithihasam Vinaara’ or the Tamil version ‘Ithikasam Kaetarra’. She played in various open tournaments in billiards and snooker as the only woman player at that time, competing with men at Chennai, Vijayawada, and Bangalore. She won the Indian National Billiards Women titles in 1991 and 1995, at the age of 62 and 66 respectively. She also played exhibition matches with the then world billiards champion Bob Marshall. She was awarded the Nataka Kala Prapoorna by the Andhra Pradesh Nataka Academy for her contribution to the arts
