A Heroic Testimony from the Grave
Judy Malinowski, a woman of unwavering courage, etched her name into history. Born on November 20, 1973, her life took a tragic turn in August 2015 when her ex-boyfriend, Michael Slager, set her ablaze at an Ohio gas station. The horrifying attack left Judy with burns covering approximately 80% of her body.
A Determined Survivor
Despite unimaginable pain, Judy clung to life. She endured two years in a hospital bed, undergoing over 50 surgeries and surviving seven resuscitations. Her resolve was unwavering—she wanted justice. Judy’s determination led her to record a videotaped testimony, ensuring that her voice would be heard even after her passing. In a historic moment, she became one of the first people in U.S. history to testify at her own murder trial.
A Final Farewell
Judy Malinowski’s strength carried her until the end. On June 2017, as her mother, Bonnie Bowes, held her hand, Judy succumbed to organ failure. Her last words to her daughter were filled with love and promise: “A part of me will go with you, Judy. And a part of you will always live here with me.” Ten seconds after Bonnie let go of Judy’s hand, she stopped breathing.
Justice Served
Judy’s heroic efforts did not go in vain. Her testimony led to a conviction for Michael Slager, who now serves a life sentence in prison. Judy’s legacy lives on through her daughters, Kaylyn and Madison, and her family’s continued fight for tougher legislation in Ohio against assaults using accelerants that cause serious disfigurement.
