What is Osteogenesis Imperfecta?
Osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease, is a genetic disorder that affects the production of collagen, a protein that gives strength and flexibility to the bones. People with this condition have bones that break easily, often from minor trauma or even without apparent cause. They may also have other symptoms, such as short stature, blue sclerae (the whites of the eyes), hearing loss, dental problems, and respiratory issues.
There are different types and severities of osteogenesis imperfecta, ranging from mild to lethal. Sean Stephenson had type III, which is considered severe and progressive. He had more than 200 bone fractures by the time he was 18 years old. He also had scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and pectus excavatum (sunken chest). He had to undergo multiple surgeries and treatments to improve his condition and quality of life.
