Aguero was married to Maradona’s daughter
The link between Aguero and Maradona is through Giannina Maradona, the youngest daughter of the late football icon. Giannina and Aguero met in 2008 and got married later that year. They had a son, Benjamin, who was born in Madrid in 2009.
Benjamin is the only grandson of Maradona, who was very fond of him and often visited him in Spain and England. Benjamin is also the godson of Lionel Messi, another Argentine superstar and a close friend of Aguero.
Giannina and Aguero divorced in 2012, after four years of marriage. The split was not amicable, as Maradona accused Aguero of being a “wimp” and of neglecting his son. Giannina defended her ex-husband on social media, saying that he was a good father and that their separation was mutual.
Aguero had a close relationship with Maradona despite the divorce
Despite the divorce and the bad blood between Maradona and Giannina, Aguero maintained a close relationship with his former father-in-law. They often praised each other in public and exchanged messages of support.
Aguero once said that Maradona was “like a second father” to him and that he learned a lot from him. He also said that he admired Maradona’s passion for football and his charisma.
Maradona, on his part, said that Aguero was “a phenomenon” and “the best striker in the world”. He also said that he was proud of him and that he wished him all the best.
When Maradona passed away in November 2020, Aguero paid tribute to him on social media, writing: “We are going to miss you all our lives. You taught us how to love the game. Forever Diego.”
Aguero and Maradona are both legends of Argentine football
Aguero and Maradona have both left their mark on Argentine football history. They have both played for the national team, winning trophies and scoring memorable goals.
Maradona is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He led Argentina to win the World Cup in 1986, scoring two iconic goals against England in the quarter-finals: the “Hand of God” and the “Goal of the Century”. He also won two Serie A titles with Napoli and a Copa del Rey with Barcelona.
Aguero is one of the most prolific strikers of his generation. He has scored over 400 goals for club and country, winning five Premier League titles with Manchester City and an Olympic gold medal with Argentina in 2008. He is also the fourth-highest scorer in Premier League history and the highest-scoring foreign player.
Aguero and Maradona are both legends of Argentine football, but they are also more than that. They are family.
