A Life Dedicated to Healing
Dr. Sinatra was born in New York City on October 15, 1946, to Elizabeth Patricia Kelly and Salvatore Charles Sinatra. He grew up loving family, food, dancing, animals, sports, and horseracing. He was inspired to pursue a career as a healer by witnessing his mother’s heartbreaking struggles with type-1 diabetes and blindness.
He attended Franklin and Marshall College pre-med on an athletic scholarship, competing as a division-1 wrestler. After graduating Albany Medical School with an MD in 1972, he started his cardiology career at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Connecticut, where he went on to serve as Chief of Cardiology, Director of Medical Education, Director of Echocardiography, and Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation.
He soon realized that conventional treatments weren’t enough to keep cardiac patients from returning to the emergency room, and dove into research and educational programs on nutrition, mind-body medicine, and numerous other alternative therapies. He became a true integrative cardiology pioneer, combining the best of conventional and alternative practices to treat his patients holistically.
He was also a certified bioenergetic psychotherapist, which enabled him to treat his patients “from the neck up”. He saw the doctor-patient relationship as a partnership where both parties actively participated in patients’ healing, and he treated patients as if they were family members, even attending their weddings and funerals.
He was a generous soul with a huge heart, who dedicated his life to protecting and healing the hearts of others. As a cardiologist, educator and author, Dr. Sinatra touched the lives of countless people with his compassionate care, advice and optimism.
A Trailblazer in Metabolic Cardiology
Dr. Sinatra was one of the leading experts on metabolic cardiology – the use of targeted nutritional supplements like coenzyme Q10 to improve energy production in the heart and ultimately quality of life. He published journal articles on cholesterol and coenzyme Q10, and authored several books on heart health, such as The Sinatra Solution: Metabolic Cardiology, Reverse Heart Disease Now, and Heartbreak and Heart Disease.
He believed that CoQ10 was one of the most important nutrients for the heart, as it helps generate ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of the cells. He also advocated for other nutraceuticals that support ATP production, such as L-carnitine, magnesium, ribose, and omega-3 fatty acids.
He also explored the role of bioenergetics and energy medicine in healing the heart. He advocated for grounding or “earthing”, which involves connecting to the earth’s natural electric field to reduce inflammation and improve blood flow. He also promoted the use of electroceuticals such as pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) and microcurrent therapy (MCT) to stimulate cellular repair and regeneration.
He was always open-minded and curious about new discoveries and insights that could help his patients. He was not afraid to challenge the status quo and question conventional wisdom. He was a master of the reframe, who believed in perceiving illness as an opportunity to make positive changes in life. No matter how dire the circumstances, he always fostered hope for healing.
A Legacy That Lives On
Dr. Sinatra’s passing is a great loss for the medical community and for all those who benefited from his wisdom and guidance. He will be remembered as a visionary doctor who changed the way we think about heart health and wellness.
His legacy lives on through his family, friends, colleagues, students, patients, readers, followers, and fans. He also founded the Heart MD Institute, an online resource center that provides information and education on integrative medicine and heart health.
He is survived by his wife Janice Sinatra; his children Drew Sinatra ND, Stephanie Sinatra, Tommy Sinatra, Stephen Sinatra Jr; his grandchildren; his siblings; his nieces; his nephews; his cousins; his extended family; his friends; his colleagues; his pets; and his horses.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Rest in peace, Dr. Sinatra. Thank you for your service to humanity.
