Tonya Knight’s Early Life and Career
Tonya Knight was born on March 24, 1966, in Peculiar, Missouri. She was always athletic and involved in sports from a young age. In 1988, she finished fourth in the prestigious Ms. Olympia contest, but she later admitted to sending a surrogate to take a mandatory drug test on her behalf before the event. She was suspended, stripped of her 1989 Ms. International title, and asked to return her prize money. This was one of the biggest controversies and shocking moments in bodybuilding history.
However, Tonya Knight did not let this setback ruin her career. She returned to the stage in 1991, winning the Ms. International title again, this time without any incident. She went on to compete in only two more pro contests, the last one being the Jan Tana Classic in 1993.

Tonya Knight married the late bodybuilder John Poteat and relocated close to Kansas City, Missouri. Although they divorced, they had a son together named Malachi. Tonya shared some photos of Malachi on her Instagram page, calling him “the best son” and adding that he “made her so proud” .
Tonya also had three brothers Timothy, Todd, and Travis, and several step- and in-law siblings. She was close to her family and friends, who supported her throughout her life and career.
Tonya Knight’s Battle with Cancer and Death
Tonya Knight was diagnosed with cancer sometime in the early 2020s. She did not reveal much about her condition or treatment publicly, but she kept in touch with her loved ones and fans through social media and phone calls. She remained positive and optimistic despite her suffering.
She also received tributes and messages of encouragement from fellow bodybuilders and celebrities, such as Rachel McLish, Mike O’Hearn, Lee Haney, Lenda Murray, Shawn Ray, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Dwayne Johnson .
Unfortunately, Tonya Knight succumbed to cancer on February 7, 2023. Her death was confirmed by Rachel McLish on Facebook , who wrote:

Even when she was suffering in ways that most of us could not imagine, she constantly reached out, texted, called, and kept in touch to update us about her struggle with ‘C’ and to make sure we were taking care of ourselves.
Above all else, she was kind, loving, and forgiving to her core. We’ve been bracing for this; we who knew her and her battle have been missing her long before today.”
Tonya Knight’s Legacy and Impact
Tonya Knight was a trailblazer in the sport of bodybuilding for women. She inspired many people with her dedication, passion, and talent. She also entertained millions of viewers with her appearance on American Gladiators from 1989 to 1992 as the character Gold . She left due to a shoulder injury but remained a fan favorite.
Tonya Knight was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame in 2011 , recognizing her achievements and contributions to the sport. She is widely regarded as one of the best female bodybuilders of all time.
