The Final Moments
Marc Chagall, one of the most famous painters of the 20th century, passed away at his home in the French Riviera village of St. Paul de Vence. His wife reported that he collapsed around 8 p.m. and died. The exact cause of his death was not immediately known, according to The Washington Post.
The Artist’s Life
Born on July 6, 1887, in Liozna, near the city of Vitebsk, Belarus, then part of the Russian Empire, Chagall lived and worked in pre- and post-Revolutionary Russia, Germany, France, and the United States. His works, luminous and glowing with color, are found all over the world and include easel paintings and murals, etchings, sculpture, and brilliant stained-glass windows.
The Cause of Death
According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Chagall died during his sleep at his home in Saint Paul de Vence. His second wife, Valentina Brodsky, whom he married in 1952, was with him. The mayor of the village in which Chagall had lived and worked for the last 20 years, Marius Issert, said the painter “simply slipped away — he died of old age.”
The Legacy of Marc Chagall
Chagall’s life and work left an indelible mark on the world of art. His unique style, which captured the insubstantial stuff that dreams are made of, earned him vast popularity. He was associated with prominent artistic movements such as Fauvism and Cubism, and his work displayed an affinity to German Expressionism. Despite these associations, Chagall refused to classify himself as belonging to any single school of painting. His legacy continues to inspire artists around the world.
