Scott Bremner, a distinguished journalist and beloved member of the Erie community, passed away peacefully on May 8th, 2023, at the age of 63. Scott had a long and illustrious career in local TV journalism, which spanned 40 years. He was known for his “Thoughts from Under the Hat” commentaries, his award-winning reporting, and his mentorship to many young journalists. His death has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Erie community.

A Passion for Journalism
Scott was born on July 29th, 1959, and raised in Ambridge, Pa. He attended Grove City College before completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Media at Edinboro University. He began his career in the early 80s as a photographer intern with WJET-TV 24 and later joined WSEE-TV 35, where he spent most of his 40-year career. During his 30 years at WSEE, Scott worked as a reporter and anchor for the 5:30, 6 and 11 pm newscasts. He also hosted the weekly community show “Newswatch Insider”. His fondest memories were covering Erie’s sister cities in Lublin, Poland, and Zibo (Shandong, China). According to GoErie.com, Scott was most well-known for his “Thoughts from Under the Hat” commentaries, in which he displayed his unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His man-on-the-street style, coupled with his trademark fedora, made him a household name in the Erie community. In 2003, he self-published the book “Thoughts from Under the Hat”, a collection of his commentaries.
A Legacy of Excellence
Throughout his career, Scott won three regional broadcast Emmy awards in the Commentary/Editorial category for his “Thoughts from Under the Hat” journalism. He also received four WMCE Golden Mike Awards and was the recipient of the inaugural first-place award for Online Columnist in 2000 from the Society of Newspaper Columnists for his columns published on GoErie.com. He was instrumental in the development of WSEE’s online content. In 2015, Scott rejoined WJET as an assignment editor, mentor, and reporter, where he continued to make a positive impact until his passing. He recently hosted a popular morning talk show for WJET/AM 1400. Scott was an avid sports enthusiast including dart and bowling leagues. He played softball in the Millcreek Service league for the Goofie’s Bar team and founded the Goofie’s golf league, which has been active for 22 years at Beechwood Golf Club. Scott’s annual golf trips to Niagara Falls, Canada, and North Myrtle Beach with lifelong friends were a highlight of his year. He followed every game of Pittsburgh Steelers with terrible towel in hand. Scott was also an active member of the La Nuova Aurora Society and enjoyed socializing around town with the people of Erie, whom he loved dearly.
A Natural Cause of Death
Scott passed away on May 8th, 2023, at his home in Erie. He was 63 years old. The cause of his death was natural, according to YourErie.com. Scott was preceded in death by his father, William Albert Bremner; mother, Margaret “Peg” Dolter Bremner; and his sister, Laurie Bremner Thomas. He is survived by his two daughters, Lauren Bremner and Megan Bremner; his brother, Bill Bremner; his sister-in-law, Mary Bremner; his brother-in-law, Jim Thomas; his nieces and nephews, Billy, Katie, Jimmy, and Maggie; and his many friends and colleagues. Scott’s funeral service was held on May 19th, 2023, at the Burton Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. in Erie. His family requested that memorial contributions be made to the Erie City Mission or the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania.

He was a loyal and fun-loving friend who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a proud and devoted father who loved his daughters more than anything.
