Marco Armand Darvish, a 20-year-old legal studies student and social justice advocate, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 24th, 2022. His death shocked and saddened his family, friends, and the University of Miami community, where he was pursuing a law degree. The cause of his death has not been officially announced, but some sources suggest that he may have suffered from a rare genetic disorder that affects the heart.
A Gift Beyond Measure
Marco was born on January 2nd, 2002, in Plano, Texas, to Mimi and Armand Darvish. His birth was a “gift beyond measure”, fulfilling the greatest dream of his parents’ hearts and shedding much light on a wounded world. He was a brilliant, creative, and loving soul who had a deep sensitivity and profound intelligence. He educated himself on the issues that pained him and developed a lifelong passion for social and global justice.
A Devoted Activist
Marco was a devoted activist who always stood on the right side of justice for humanity, civil rights, equality, women’s rights, LGBTQ+, and anti-racism with deep passion, strength, empathy, and logic. He never backed down without a good fight for global advocacy and reform. He attended NYU at the age of 17 and later transferred to the University of Miami, where he found his passion in legal studies. He had dreams of becoming an attorney and making the world a better place.
A Terrible Tragedy
Marco’s life was cut far too short when he died in his sleep on June 24th, 2022. His family and friends were devastated by the loss of such a bright and beautiful person. His uncle, Josh Gad, a famous actor and voice of Olaf in Frozen, announced the news on Twitter and Instagram, saying that their pain was far too deep and that they were trying to make sense of it. He also shared some photos of Marco throughout the years and praised him for his radical acceptance and agape love for those around him.
According to some reports, Marco may have had a rare genetic condition called Brugada syndrome, which causes abnormal heart rhythms and can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. However, this has not been confirmed by his family or medical authorities. The exact cause of his death remains unknown.
A Lasting Legacy
Marco’s memory will live on forever through his family, friends, and the scholarships that have been created in his honor. His mother, Mimi Darvish, donated $250,000 to start the Marco Darvish Memorial Endowed Scholarship and Award in Legal Studies and the Marco Darvish Memorial Spending Scholarship at the University of Miami. These scholarships will support students who believe strongly in global and social advocacy and can carry on his beliefs.
Marco was a light in this world who touched many lives with his kindness, wisdom, and courage. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and loved him. May he rest in peace.
