She had an elder sister, Christiana Barbara Köchert, and two half-siblings, Drea and Andrew Besch, from her mother’s second marriage to radio executive Joseph Besch. She immigrated to the United States with her family after World War II and grew up in Chappaqua, New York. She attended Horace Greeley High School and Connecticut College for Women, but dropped out to pursue an acting career in New York City.
She started her career in theater, appearing in plays such as Fame, The Chinese Prime Minister, Here Lies Jeremy Troy, and Once for the Asking. She then moved to television, where she starred in several soap operas, such as The Secret Storm, The Edge of Night, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, and Somerset.
