The Sudden Loss
Bob Kennedy, the public address announcer and “voice” of the Buckeyes for the past 23 years, passed away suddenly over the weekend. Known for his big heart and love for his Buckeyes, Kennedy was a true professional at his craft and a friend to all. He was most recognized as the PA voice of the football Buckeyes in Ohio Stadium, a role he had held for the past 20 years.
The Circumstances of His Death
Kennedy was scheduled to announce the Ohio State baseball game Sunday afternoon against the University of Illinois. When he did not arrive at the stadium, Ohio State officials contacted local authorities to do a wellness check at his home. Department officials were informed a short while later that Kennedy had died at his home.
A Life Dedicated to Sports
Kennedy was not only the voice of the football Buckeyes but also handled PA responsibilities at Ohio State for games and events involving the baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and women’s hockey games. He even filled in for men’s basketball games. He was the athletics PA announcer for his alma mater, Otterbein University, and the Columbus Clippers.
His Health Struggles
According to some sources, Bob had been ill for some time. He had recently shared his health status on social media, revealing that he had osteoarthritis and a cataract in the left eye.
Remembering Bob Kennedy
Kennedy’s sudden passing has left a void in Ohio State Sports. His booming voice, which he once joked could be heard in New Albany and Hilliard without using a microphone, will be sorely missed. His dedication to his craft, his love for the Buckeyes, and his affable nature will be remembered by all who knew him.
In the words of Jerry Emig, Associate AD for Communications, “Bob had a big heart and he loved his Buckeyes. And, he loved his PA jobs. He was a true professional at his craft and a friend to us all. He knew our coaches and student-athletes and he certainly knew the histories well of many Ohio State sports, and he loved to talk about them”.
