A Force on the Cheer Floor
Ortiz was a 10-time national champion and a two-time world champion in cheerleading, competing with the University of Louisville and the GymTyme All-Stars. He was known for his skills in stunting, tumbling, jumping, dancing, and performing, as well as his charisma and leadership.
GymTyme All-Stars released a statement regarding his death, saying, “Eric Ortiz was a force when he joined our program. He could stunt, tumble, jump, dance, and perform with some of the greatest athletes that have ever stepped a shoe onto a cheer floor. He was captivating as an athlete. He could do it all and that he did. He was a leader at practice and on the competition floor.”
A Sweet, Amazing, and Genuine Person
Ortiz was also remembered for his personality, his positivity, and his impact on others. He was described as a “sweet, amazing, and genuine person” by GymTyme All-Stars, who added, “There were always plenty of smiles, hugs, and reasons to laugh when he was near. His positivity was infectious with his teammates, program, and friends. He was a light that pushed whatever darkness and worry present- away.”
Many of his friends and fellow cheerleaders expressed their grief and condolences on social media, including Gabi Butler, who stars on the Netflix show Cheer. She wrote on Facebook, “My heart is completely torn into a million pieces…. the thought of not being able to hear your laugh or see that beautiful smile shatters me. Eric Ortiz, you were the most beautiful soul I’ve ever met.”
A Shining Star Gone Too Soon
Ortiz’s death has left a void in the cheer community and in the hearts of those who knew him. He was a son, a brother, an uncle, and a friend to many. He was a shining star who brightened up every room he entered. He was a champion who inspired others with his talent and passion.
According to his obituary, there will be a visitation for Ortiz on Thursday in Bronx, New York, followed by a funeral service on Friday. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and fans.
