Pazuzu Algarad was born as John Alexander Lawson on August 12, 1978, in San Francisco, California. He moved to Clemmons, North Carolina, with his mother when he was a child. He became fascinated with Satanism and changed his name to Pazuzu Illah Algarad in 2002, after the demon from the movie The Exorcist. He also covered his face with tattoos and filed his teeth into points.
Algarad lived with his mother in a rundown house that he turned into a den of depravity. He invited other outcasts and misfits to join him in his rituals of animal sacrifice, blood drinking, drug abuse, and sexual orgies. He claimed to have supernatural powers and to worship Satan. He also abused and tortured his two fiancés, Amber Burch and Krystal Matlock, who were loyal to him and participated in his killings.
Algarad was first arrested in 2010 for accessory after the fact of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Joseph Emmrick Chandler, who was shot by one of Algarad’s friends in a park near the Yadkin River. Algarad helped dispose of Chandler’s body and was sentenced to probation. In 2014, he was arrested again after the police received a tip that there were human remains buried in his backyard. The police excavated the site and found the skeletons of two men who had been missing since 2009: Joshua Fredrick Wetzler and Tommy Dean Welch. Algarad confessed to killing Wetzler and Burch confessed to killing Welch. Matlock was also arrested for helping bury the bodies.

Algarad was held at the Central Prison in Raleigh, North Carolina, while awaiting trial for his murders. He faced the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole if convicted. However, he never made it to trial. On October 28, 2015, he was found dead in his cell from an apparent suicide. He had a deep cut on his left arm that caused him to bleed to death.
