A Pioneer of Surf Music
Don Wilson was born on February 10, 1933, in Tacoma, Washington. He started playing guitar as a teenager and formed a duo with bassist Bob Bogle in 1958. They called themselves The Versatones and played at local clubs and bars. They soon changed their name to The Ventures and recorded their first single, “Walk, Don’t Run”, in 1960. The song was a cover of a jazz tune by Johnny Smith and became a huge hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The Ventures went on to record over 40 albums and sell over 100 million records worldwide. They are considered one of the most influential instrumental rock bands of all time, especially in the genre of surf music. Their songs featured catchy melodies, tight harmonies, and innovative guitar effects. They also popularized the use of electric guitars, amplifiers, and effects pedals in rock music.
Some of their most famous songs include “Perfidia”, “Hawaii Five-O”, “Apache”, “Telstar”, and “Wipe Out”. They also recorded many theme songs for movies and TV shows, such as “Batman”, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”, and “Secret Agent Man”. They influenced many musicians and bands, such as The Beach Boys, The Ramones, Dick Dale, and Eddie Van Halen.
A Legacy That Lives On
Don Wilson was the longest-serving member of The Ventures, playing with the band until his retirement in 2018. He was also the band’s spokesperson and manager for many years. He received many honors and awards for his musical achievements, such as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

According to Rolling Stone, Don Wilson’s family is planning a private memorial service for him in Tacoma. They also asked fans to donate to the MusiCares Foundation in his memory.
