His father is a legendary college football coach, who led the Virginia Tech Hokies for 29 years and won 280 games. Shane followed his father’s footsteps and played wide receiver and long snapper for Virginia Tech from 1995 to 1999. He was part of the team that played for the national championship in 1999.
After his playing career, Shane pursued coaching as well. He started as a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech and Tennessee, before becoming a position coach at Mississippi State and South Carolina. Todd Beamer was born on November 24, 1968, in Flint, Michigan, to David and Peggy Beamer. He grew up in New York, Illinois, and California, where he excelled in sports, especially baseball. He attended Wheaton College as well, where he met his future wife Lisa Brosious. He graduated with a degree in business in 1991 and an MBA from DePaul University in 1993.
Todd worked for Oracle Corporation as a field marketing representative and account manager. He lived in Plainsboro, New Jersey, with his wife and two sons: David and Andrew. His wife was pregnant with their third child at the time of his death.
On September 11, 2001, Todd boarded United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco for a business meeting. The flight was one of four that were hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists that day as part of a coordinated attack on the United States. The hijackers intended to crash the plane into either the White House or the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C.
However, Todd and other passengers learned about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon from phone calls with their loved ones. They realized that their flight was also part of the plot and decided to take action. Todd called an operator from an onboard phone and told her about the situation. He also asked her to say a prayer with him and recited the Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 23.
Todd then told the operator that some passengers were going to try to take back control of the plane from the hijackers. His last words were “Are you guys ready? Okay. Let’s roll.”
Todd and other passengers stormed the cockpit and fought with the hijackers. During the struggle, the plane lost control and crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all 44 people on board. But their heroic act prevented the plane from reaching its intended target and saved many more lives.
Todd’s wife Lisa gave birth to their daughter Morgan Kay two months after his death. She also wrote a book titled Let’s Roll! Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage about her husband’s life and legacy. Todd was posthumously awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award by ESPN in 2002 .
